Generally, the conception is that Sport and Politics do not mix. No country in the world wants to disrupt the sanctity of sport. So, as much as humanly possible humans avoid the incursion of politics into man\u2019s greatest social activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sport is the one area of human activity that has remained largely above the fray of all human divisions, in colour, race, religion, status, and so on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is confirmation of just how powerful sport is, how every nation wants its youths to be involved in participating in all the major sporting events without prejudice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even when the USA wanted to \u2018punish\u2019 China for human rights abuses on the eve of the ongoing Winter Olympics in Beijing, unlike in the past when it would have led several of its allies to withdraw from the games in protest, the best the country did this time is slap China on the wrist with a \u2018toothless\u2019 declaration of a Diplomatic boycott by US officials (and those of Canada and Australia) at the opening ceremony of the games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The world is coming around to realise that sport has the power to do what no other human activity has achieved in history \u2013 bring about global peace, friendships, justice and equity in human affairs, even if only temporarily during the events. Can that situation be sustained beyond competition periods?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nigeria may have stumbled on that secret weapon and is taking the lead in exploration and research on just how powerful can sport be in the world in a creative relationship with Diplomacy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In history,\u00a0<\/span>Sport and politics often collided<\/span>.
It happened\u00a0at the<\/span>\u00a0Berlin\u00a0Olympics\u00a0<\/span>in 1936\u00a0with Jesse Owens, the Black African American athlete<\/span>.
It happened at the 1966 World Cup\u00a0when Ghana led an African boycott in protest against only one slot allocation to Africa and Afro-Asia at the global football fiesta<\/span>.
Nigeria led\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>protest\u00a0the African boycott of the<\/span>\u00a01976\u00a0Montreal Olympics.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nigeria also led the resistance of the call to boycott the 1980 Moscow games by the USA in protest against Russia\u2019s invasion of Afghanistan.\u00a0<\/span>

<\/p>\n

That Apartheid ended and a Black\u00a0prisoner<\/span>\u00a0became President of South Africa was influenced\u00a0largely\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0the power of Nigeria-led deployment of sport to fight racism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is now most instructive and revealing that in 2021,\u00a0<\/span>despite the unprecedented crisis, conflicts and a pandemic\u00a0<\/span>in the world, every country participated at the 2021\u00a0Olympics.\u00a0

<\/p>\n

Sport may\u00a0actually united the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Deliberately tested and deployed properly, the world would soon know that what it has been furtively looking for in Sokoto (a northern city in Nigeria) has always been (latent) in the pocket of its\u00a0sokoto<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(Yoruba word for trousers).<\/span>
Late Nelson\u00a0<\/span>Mandela\u00a0may have found \u2018it\u2019 when he remarked that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span><\/i><\/b>Sport has the power to change the world<\/i><\/b>\u2019<\/span><\/i><\/b>.\u00a0<\/i><\/b>

Chief Sunday Dare, the minister in charge of\u00a0Nigeria\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Ministry of Youth and Sports\u00a0in Nigeria<\/span>,\u00a0a very brilliant man, indeed,\u00a0<\/span>is daring to go where no Minister before him has being, and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>determined to take Nigerian sports to a new place, with his\u00a0<\/span>National Sports Industry Policy initiative\u00a0that seeks to explore the humongous global sports business opportunities<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0

Whilst still at that,<\/span>\u00a0no one\u00a0should be surprised that he is the first Minister of Sports in Africa to\u00a0join a new initiative introduced by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, to establish a\u00a0Sports and Diplomacy Unit<\/b>, to\u00a0<\/span>undertake research\u00a0into\u00a0<\/span>the power of sport to achieve\u00a0unlimited goals,\u00a0<\/span>beyond medals and trophies,\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0uncharted new frontiers in the human international human relations stratosphere.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

The starting point is to unite the continent.\u00a0<\/span>
In the words of Professor Patrice Lumumba, the Kenyan legal luminary, foremost pan-Africanist and human rights activist,<\/span>\u00a0“Africans must unite, or we all\u00a0shall\u00a0<\/span>perish”.\u00a0

The Unit has set out to fulfil the dreams<\/span>\u00a0of the founding African\u00a0leaders at Independence<\/span>, the class of Osaigbovo Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nwalimu Nyerere,\u00a0Leopold Senghor,\u00a0<\/span>Jomo Kenyatta and others,<\/span>\u00a0including Nigeria’s\u00a0Nnamdi Azikiwe<\/span>, to\u00a0build<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0united and powerful\u00a0<\/span>Africa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sport and Diplomacy<\/b>\u00a0will become\u00a0<\/span>tools\u00a0\u00a0driven by the\u00a0<\/span>spirit of\u00a0FESTAC ’77<\/b>\u00a0that set out to unify the Black Race, revive Black Consciousness, Culture and Civilisation,\u00a0<\/span>to explore the vast\u00a0human<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>universe.<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0journey must start with a first step.<\/p>\n


That first step is ‘Conversations<\/b>‘, a series\u00a0<\/span>designed to set an agenda,\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0establish\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0simple and\u00a0<\/span>practical strategy\u00a0that will<\/span>\u00a0conquer\u00a0human\u00a0<\/span>differences and divisions, rise above prejudices, ride the waves of scepticism and negativity, and soar above the dark clouds of history, <\/span>in order to arrive at a new place of prosperity and the most\u00a0<\/span>rapid development. All of these<\/span>\u00a0through the skillful\u00a0manipulation<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0S<\/span>port and Diplomacy.<\/span>

<\/p>\n

Next week, some of the best brains on the subjects of Sport, Business, History and Diplomacy will assemble in Nigeria, a very significant country in the\u00a0history<\/span>\u00a0of international sports diplomacy, to kick-start\u00a0‘the conversations’<\/b>.\u00a0

Chief Sunday Dare\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Professor Egh<\/span>osa Osaghae,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs,\u00a0will<\/span>\u00a0team up\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>pilot that\u00a0\u2018<\/span>ship\u2019 of history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>


Idorenyin Uyoe is a Nigerian American, a foremost consultant on the business of sports, a scholar and a custodian of African sports history. He comes from Atlanta, USA to illuminate the subject of ‘Power of Sports and Diplomacy’, and to\u00a0share his vision as he peers into the huge global economic space. It will\u00a0<\/span>be a feast for all those that listen\u00a0to him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n


Prof. Ikaweba Bunting is a Tanzanian American, a hist\u00f2rian, scholar, civil rights activist and an expert on peace and conflict resolution in Africa. He comes in from the\u00a0Nwalimu Nyerere Foundation<\/b>\u00a0in Tanzania to share his experiences and knowledge, and envision the future\u00a0of<\/span>\u00a0this combination\u00a0of sports and diplomacy<\/span>.\u00a0

Ron Freeman is a world-renowned African American, an Olympic Gold and Bronze medalist. He was a \u2018victim\u2019 also of the mixture of politics and sports in that historic 1968 Olympics that changed human history.\u00a0<\/span>With his awesome work around some African countries, he comes to Nigeria from New York City in America, to recall his experiences of some of the epochal moments in sports, and\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>forecast a future with these new tools.\u00a0

Ron Davis is an African American, a former international athlete, coach and teacher. He played a key role in the success story of one of Africa’s greatest middle-distance runners in history, Tanzania’s legendary Filbert Bayi.\u00a0

Ron joins the ‘party’ in Lagos, straight from his base in Tanzania, to recall Nigeria’s glory years in Sports and how the country led Africa in the\u00a0past\u00a0<\/span>and must return to that role now, in order to make Africa attain true greatness through sports and diplomacy.\u00a0

All 4 gentlemen will be in Lagos next week.<\/p>\n

They will speak to the world.\u00a0
They will speak to the Ambass<\/span>adors of all 53 African countries,<\/span>\u00a0plus\u00a0those of the\u00a0<\/span>19 other countries\u00a0that have become<\/span>\u00a0home\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0persons of African descent\u00a0outside the continent<\/span>.\u00a0

There shall also be representatives of sports and political stakeholders in Nigeria, the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Nigeria Institute for Sports, all National Sports Federations, the youths from selected Higher Institutions around Lagos.<\/p>\n

The rest of the world can watch the event LIVE, on\u00a0television through Africa\u2019s single largest television network,\u00a0<\/span>NTA. The event will\u00a0also\u00a0<\/span>be streamed, LIVE, to the rest of the world on designated\u00a0social media\u00a0<\/span>platforms.<\/p>\n

So, on Thursday, February 24, 2022, in the Auditorium of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, something new and refreshing will be birthed, a project that will unite Africa, impact the world and make it a better place for all humans.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
