Who is the greatest mid-field football player in the history of Nigerian football?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The country is replete with a few footballers that can fit that bill – Sunday Oliseh, Mikel Obi,\u00a0Jay Jay<\/i><\/b>\u00a0Okocha, Henry Nwosu, Friday Ekpo, Etim Esin, Samuel Garba Okoye, Haruna Ilerika, and one or two others, all exceptionally gifted players that excelled playing different roles in the midfield of Nigeria\u2019s national football team.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oliseh was a tough marker and brilliant passer of the ball.\u00a0Jay Jay<\/i><\/b> was a dribbling machine and creative genius. Henry Nwosu was a skills-workshop, great passer and deadly shot with both feet. Samuel Garba Okoye was a ballerina on the ball, masterful at linking defence and attack with grace and effortless ease. Kanu Nwankwo was elegant, skillful and a great thinker with the ball.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this constellation of superstars, however, one player stands out in my mind, and in my humble opinion was the greatest of them in combining all the different skills and roles \u2013 dribbler, marker, passer, holding, scoring, and tireless, endless marking and running.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In versatility, he stands atop the pile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To crown it all, to set him completely apart, on March 22, 1980, probably the greatest day of his career, he played as a centre forward. That\u2019s was the clearest demonstration of how good a player Muda was.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, he stands alone in versatility. That\u2019s why he also stands out as the most decorated home-based footballer in the country\u2019s football history.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am writing about him today in humble tribute to my friend, my\u00a0Egba <\/i><\/b>brother, and my team mate who died at the time when he was about to start a new chapter in his life, to start to reap bountifully from his illustrious service to Nigerian football and to the country.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is hard to believe that it has been 31 years since the\u00a0<\/span>gentle,\u00a0very\u00a0<\/span>handsome,\u00a0always-smiling,\u00a0<\/span>hardworking football genius died ‘prematurely’.\u00a0

<\/p>\n

By the time he left the world for eternity\u00a0on\u00a0July 6, 1991<\/b>, he was only\u00a037<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mudashiru Babatunde Tiamiyu Lawal<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0\u2018Haji Shiru\u2019<\/i><\/b>\u00a0as most of his fans all over Nigeria called him,\u00a0<\/span>was the only African\u00a0at the time\u00a0<\/span>to have participated in 5 African Cup of Nations\u00a0C<\/span>hampionships\u00a0(he was decorated by the Confederation of African Football, CAF, for that feat)<\/span>; the first footballer to be appointed Nigeria’s\u00a0Football Ambassador<\/i><\/b>\u00a0(with an office space within the premises of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports in Lagos);<\/span>\u00a0the longest serving player in the national team of Nigeria; the first and only football player to be adorned with two National Honours,\u00a0MON\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0MFR<\/b>.\u00a0

Until Rashidi Yekini,\u00a0Jay Jay<\/i><\/b>\u00a0Okocha, and Kanu Nwankwo\u00a0came to dominate conversation on African footballers with their exploits in Europe,\u00a0<\/span>Muda Lawal was\u00a0one of the\u00a0<\/span>most talked about\u00a0and celebrated\u00a0<\/span>in-field player in African football\u00a0playing entirely locally in Nigeria<\/span>, from the time of his exploits in Dire Dawa in 1976, to his captaincy of the\u00a0Green Eagles<\/i><\/b>\u00a0at his 5th AFCON in Libya.\u00a0

Muda left\u00a0Shooting Stars FC<\/b>\u00a0in 1984 following the disbandment of the team by the Governor of Oyo State when the team lost the final match of the African Club\u00a0\u00a0Championship. Muda\u2019s departure\u00a0<\/span>10 years later to play for two of the most unlikely clubs in\u00a0Abiola Babes FC in Abeokuta<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0Stationery Stores FC<\/b>\u00a0in Lagos<\/b>\u00a0<\/b>for his last few years as a player was a \u2018sad\u2019 chapter in his relationship with the club that gave us all a foundation upon which we built a great name for ourselves, for the club and the country.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His time in those clubs were not memorable.\u00a0<\/b><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Only fanatical supporters of the two clubs would recall any great exploits of his to any great length.\u00a0
<\/span><\/p>\n

Incidentally, Muda joined\u00a0Adekunle Awesu<\/b>\u00a0and I in\u00a0Housing Corporation FC<\/b>\u00a0in 1973, and all three of us joined \u2018Sooting Stars\u2019<\/i><\/b>\u00a0a few months apart in 1974.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was inevitable that he would return to\u00a0Shooting Stars International FC\u00a0<\/i><\/b>to cap his career in football,\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0his roots and to\u00a0<\/span>the club that gave him the\u00a0biggest\u00a0<\/span>platform to exhibit his genius on the biggest stages in African football.\u00a0

Muda loved football with a passion. He lived the game completely, sleeping and dreaming it.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0

Up till that point\u00a0in 1991 that he passed on<\/span>, football had given him everything he\u00a0dreamt of<\/span>\u00a0in life – a great career, numerous national\u00a0awards<\/span>, an official position in government\u00a0<\/span>upon which he would build his life-after-active\u00a0<\/span>football, a great wife and\u00a0beautiful\u00a0<\/span>children, and tons of\u00a0close\u00a0<\/span>friends around the country, including\u00a0Ayinla Omowura<\/b>, the legendary Egba\u00a0‘Apala’<\/i><\/b>\u00a0musical maestro<\/span>\u00a0who died shortly after Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980.\u00a0

Muda and Kunle Awesu\u00a0were the\u00a0best of friends as a result of their mutual love for\u00a0<\/span>Ayinla\u00a0and his music. Kunle was fanatical about Ayinla. He\u00a0<\/span>would only play\u00a0Ayinla\u2019s songs\u00a0<\/span>in his car after the three of us bought our first cars in the wake of our victory, winning the Africa Cup winners Cup,<\/span>\u00a0in 1976.\u00a0Haji Shiru<\/i><\/b>\u00a0was,<\/span> like Awesu, a die-hard Ayinla fan.\u00a0\u00a0

Muda and Kunle<\/span>\u00a0would always head to Abeokuta from Ibadan\u00a0at the end of many\u00a0<\/span>of our\u00a0home\u00a0<\/span>matches in orde<\/span>r to attend\u00a0the man\u2019s gigs\u00a0<\/span>in those days.\u00a0 The<\/span>\u00a0music that ‘bored’ me out of\u00a0joining them on their nocturnal\u00a0<\/span>trips to Abeokuta, even though, occasionally, we participated in some other\u00a0<\/span>escapades as\u00a0young\u00a0<\/span>bachelors\u00a0around<\/span>\u00a0Ibadan in those days.\u00a0

I\u00a0was a great\u00a0<\/span>influence\u00a0in<\/span> Muda’s marriage to my best friend’s sister. That I was also a footballer, very close to Yetunde\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0family, was\u00a0Muda\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0biggest\u00a0\u2018<\/span>credential\u2019 to get her family\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0succumb to pressures, and\u00a0<\/span>finally accept that their\u00a0\u2018<\/span>special\u2019<\/span>\u00a0daughter whose beauty was a magnet for many a rich suitor in Ibadan at the time, was not doing a disservice to the family by marrying a footballer.\u00a0

That\u2019s how<\/span>\u00a0Muda married Yetunde and they settled into a great life together throughout the latter part of our football career. When children started\u00a0to arrive\u00a0<\/span>and Muda\u00a0had to take<\/span>\u00a0his football\u00a0odyssey\u00a0<\/span>to Abeokuta and finally to Lagos,\u00a0the displacement\u00a0<\/span>created a\u00a0slight<\/span>\u00a0turbulence that was only finally\u00a0calmed by his eventual\u00a0<\/span>return to Ibadan\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>rejoin\u00a0Shooting Stars FC<\/i><\/b>\u00a0as a member of the technical team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At that time,\u00a0Shiru<\/i><\/b>\u00a0had started toying with several options of business to retire into. I never quite saw him settling down into the role of a football coach. He loved to play and not to coach. His choice was business!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>So, he spent a lot of time with his\u00a0<\/span>friend, another Lawal,\u00a0<\/span>near the old Kingsway\u00a0S<\/span>tores in Ibadan\u00a0planning, I believe,<\/span>\u00a0several business\u00a0ventures.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, on July 6, 1991, the \u2018world\u2019 ended.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was hard to deal with at the time. How could such a young, healthy and extremely fit man suddenly collapse\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
and die?\u00a0 <\/span>Time has not healed anything for those that knew the great man, his humanity, his genius and his friendliness with everyone. But life has trudged on and it all seems like yesterday.<\/span><\/p>\n

That Muda died so young is what makes the pain of his passage 31 years ago still this fresh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Muda Lawal came, saw, and achieved a great deal in Nigerian football. He now rests in our minds in the great memories of him – a man most distinguishable by a wide permanent laughter dancing on his face.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a giant portrait of him hanging on the wall of\u00a0The Sports Lounge\u00a0<\/b>in Abeokuta, in dedication to the greatest midfield player in Nigeria\u2019s football history, in my humble reckoning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
