It is the day after the day, after the day, after\u2026\u2026<\/span>.!<\/span><\/p>\n


I am still in a trance.
I have been in a daze, unable to fully rationalise and comprehend the events of the past\u00a07 days<\/span>\u00a0in my life.\u00a0\u00a0

It has been like a dream.\u00a0
I am waking up this morning finally to the reality that time has flown by… that my little attempt to quietly celebrate the anniversary of my birth date,\u00a0has been<\/span>\u00a0a joke.\u00a0

Even when the calls started to rain from\u00a0last Thursday<\/span>\u00a0night, I couldn’t, or wouldn’t get it fully into my head that I am actually becoming\u00a0\u2018old\u2019,\u00a0<\/span>like my l\u00e0te father when I visited him in Gombe at 17. He was\u00a0a warehouse manager \u00e0t the British Cotton Growing Association, BCGA, at the time<\/span>.\u00a0

During one of our conversations, he told me his age – 57!\u00a0Fifty what?\u00a0
I looked at him in amazement. How could\u00a0anybody<\/span>\u00a0be that old, least of all my father<\/span>? It\u00a0would take<\/span>\u00a0an eternity to get to such an ‘old’ age, I reasoned.\u00a0

That \u2018eternity\u2019 has come and gone in a flash.<\/span><\/p>\n

One morning a few years\u00a0ago,\u00a0<\/span>I walked into my office in Yaba, Lagos\u00a0and my\u00a0workers were organising\u00a0<\/span>a small ceremony to mark my 50th birthday.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0
Impossible! 50?\u00a0When did it happen?
I was already 50, old like my family?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did it happen?\u00a0Where did the years vaporise into in my life?\u00a0

I have not fully resolved that in my mind for years, and suddenly\u00a0<\/span>here comes\u00a0\u2018<\/span>70\u2019<\/span>\u00a0sneaking in\u00a0on me\u00a0<\/span>like a thief in the\u00a0dark<\/span>. You mean another 20 years have sped\u00a0past\u00a0<\/span>since that day in\u00a0my office in\u00a0<\/span>2002?\u00a0

I cannot feel the weight\u00a0of such an old age\u00a0<\/span>on this body, nor\u00a0the pressure\u00a0<\/span>on\u00a0this\u00a0<\/span>mind.\u00a0But the reality dawns.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My consolation is a realisation that \u2018Age\u2019, for me, has been but a harmless\u00a0<\/span>number\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>a beautiful\u00a0reminder of\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the eternal\u00a0\u2018tick tock\u2019 <\/i><\/b>doing its thing, whilst I am doing mine. Neither of us disturbing the other.\u00a0<\/span>

So, the past\u00a07<\/span>\u00a0days have been\u00a0unforgettably\u00a0<\/span>beautiful.\u00a0

On Thursday\u00a0<\/span>night,\u00a0two days before the actual anniversary-date,\u00a0<\/span>my friends on\u00a0The Sports Parliament<\/i><\/b>\u00a0‘beat the gun’\u00a0with<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0public\u00a0<\/span>celebration on national television.\u00a0It kicked off a national frenzy.\u00a0<\/span>

Since then, I have\u00a0been<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>left\u00a0<\/span>dumbfounded by\u00a0developments,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pondering on the shower of tributes\u00a0that have poured in like rain<\/span>, and humbled by the\u00a0total\u00a0<\/span>experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost 40 years since I hung my football boots and embarked on a new life, that of a nomad in sports education, business, promotion and development sectors, my little contributions here and there have not gone unnoticed and are being appreciated now in the kindest words and messages on the occasion of my landmark birth-date anniversary that I told nobody about and wanted to spend quietly in \u2018hibernation\u2019 with my small family in Lagos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, it has been an avalanche of goodwill messages. It has been an overwhelming experience, to be shown this level and quantum of unsolicited and unbridled love and appreciation by a global audience made possible by the power of social media and the information superhighway.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am humbled and very grateful to everyone that has shared my special day with me in messages, gifts and prayers this past week.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kindly permit me in my column this week to mention a few whilst acknowledging all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This my humble\u2019 Thank You\u2019 comes from the bottom of my heart and goes out to:<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>President\u00a0of the Federal Republic of Nigeria<\/span>, Muhammadu Buhari,\u00a0GCFR;\u00a0<\/span>former President,\u00a0Chief<\/span>\u00a0Olusegun Obasanjo,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>GCFR,\u00a0<\/span>(he actually called\u00a0on telephone<\/span>\u00a0and sang the Birthday song into my ears); Governor of\u00a0Ogun<\/span>\u00a0State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, MFR<\/span>; former\u00a0G<\/span>overnors of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosu, CON, and Otunba Gbenga Daniel; former Governors of Ondo and Abia States,\u00a0<\/span>Olusegun Mimiko\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Orji Uzor Kalu, respectively;\u00a0<\/span>former Chief of Naval Staff,\u00a0Vice-<\/span>Admiral Jubril Ayinla; the Obas of the 4 sections \u00f2f Egbaland, the Alake\u00a0of Egbaland<\/span>, the Osile\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Oke Ona\u00a0Egba<\/span>, the new\u00a0King-in-Waiting,\u00a0<\/span>Olowu\u00a0of Owu kingdom,\u00a0<\/span>and the Agura\u00a0of Gbagura<\/span>;\u00a0several other Kaabiyesis from across Yorubaland; Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey; radio and television stations\u00a0across the country that\u00a0<\/span>devoted<\/span>\u00a0hours of programming to wish me well; several newspaper\u00a0and magazine\u00a0<\/span>publications\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>paid<\/span>\u00a0me lavish tributes in\u00a0features<\/span>; the Clergy, many of whom I have never\u00a0met\u00a0<\/span>in my life\u00a0that offered<\/span>\u00a0me prayers, (including one that called\u00a0at dawn\u00a0<\/span>from a mountain top); many childhood\u00a0friends<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and classmates,\u00a0<\/span>many of whom I had lost contact with\u00a0through the years, and\u00a0<\/span>more recent friends and acquaintances.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have received a\u00a0<\/span>countless number of messages, calls and\u00a0social media\u00a0<\/span>postings from sports fans\u00a0that I must have encountered, in one way or the other,<\/span>\u00a0in the course of my chequered life in sports, and\u00a0from persons I met<\/span>\u00a0in my social interactions in the world of art, engineering, journ\u00e0lism, the media, education, health and wellbeing, music, film, youth\u00a0and culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, I go back to my\u00a0cultural\u00a0<\/span>roots, to my upbringing, to say \u2018Thank You\u2019 to everyone that has blessed me in this season of celebration of life. I\u00a0<\/span>prostrate before the throne of Grace in absolute surrender and with the deepest gratitude, as I<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pray that all\u00a0<\/span>my co-travellers and pilgrims on\u00a0this uncertain<\/span>\u00a0journey on earth\u00a0shall enjoy the Grace, Munificence and Magnificence of\u00a0<\/span>the Creator of the Universe\u00a0in over-abundance.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>

I appreciate Nigeria, the beleaguered country that provided me the platform to become another small\u00a0\u00a0instrument in her difficult and challenging journey in national evolution and development. Despite all the challenges the country has faced, she still spares a moment to celebrate an ordinary Nigerian whose claim to fame is as a football player that served his country diligently and faithfully. I have faith that the country will achieve its deserved greatness one day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n


For my\u00a0immediate and distant\u00a0<\/span>family, words are not enough to express my gratitude\u00a0to you all\u00a0<\/span>for standing by me, foibles and all, through all the decades.\u00a0With\u00a0<\/span>the weight of the love\u00a0you have all shown me this past one week<\/span>, I am no longer afraid of the number 70.\u00a0

Finally,\u00a0<\/span>I walk into the rest of my life on earth with confidence and conviction to do right and\u00a0continue to\u00a0<\/span>add my little bit to making\u00a0my country and\u00a0<\/span>the world a better place for the next generation, the youths and the children.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
