Hi Move your body, Live Longer!
Three days ago, a young Nigerian, former national tennis player based in Lagos, Dolapo Gafar, died of heart failure. He was managing High Blood Pressure disease before his death.
In the past 6 months, 3 prominent, former Green Eagles players died, majorly from heart-related diseases (High blood pressure, Heart attacks ), few with Diabetes and some form of Cancer
Nigeria’s sports history is littered with stories of similar deaths from similar causes. The list includes Muda Lawal, Samuel Okwaraji, Sunday Bada, Tuñde Bamidele, Kunle Awesu, Stephen Keshi, and so on.
It is very clear that even athletes, considered some of the healthiest beings, are not immune from the vagaries of Non - communicable diseases that have been on the rampage in Nigeria for decades.
Easily, High Blood Pressure is the biggest killer of Nigerians. Over 70% of the adult population are carriers of the disease.
The cost to the economy of Nigeria of importing the drugs for managing the disease is astronomical.
Not since Malaria disease in the 1940s and 1950s has the country faced such a medical challenge as she faces today.
Yet, majority of Nigerians are not aware of all the facts and the level of devastation of the disease. The governments are also not creating the sufficient awareness. There isn’t on ground the medical facilities and number of personnel on ground to tackle the menace.
The Nigerian Heart Foundation, a Non Governmental Organization established more than 30 years ago ,that has devoted itself with the task and responsibility to tackling the causes of heart diseases through awareness, advocacy and legislation are handicapped as there are essential gaps in the support of government that needs to be bridged.
It is a disturbing situation that needs the immediate attention of all Nigerians and the Government.
Using sports persons as a point of contact and reference, on ‘90 minutes with Mathematical’ this Saturday, June 21, 2025, I shall be joined by an athlete, a medical personnel, a member of the Nigerian Heart Foundation, and someone from the public to discuss the very important matter.
Every Nigerian should take an interest in this ‘silent killer’ wreaking havoc amongst the people, pauperising families with the cost of managing the disease for life, and reducing the life expectancy of the people.
This is a critical conversation with simple but useful tips on how to avoid the diseases, what governments must do NOW, and the first step for every individual to take to elongate their life.
‘Move your body, live longer’ is on this Saturday morning from 7:30 am on Eagle7 Sports Radio 103.7 FM, Wasimi, near Abeokuta, Nigeria.
