Tonight on the Sports Parliament.
"Sport and the Law"
Tonight, Parliamentarians will be veering into the world of sports jurisprudence.
On December 20, 2020, Justice A.O. Faji, of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi Lagos, delivered a landmark judgement that could have significant implications for the resolution of conflicts in Nigerian sports administration.
The court overturned a decision of a panel of WADA, the world anti-doping agency in Nigeria, describing it as not observing "the rules of fair hearing either as regards its composition or its deleberations.." where a member of the panel was "judge and witness in breach of the rule of natural justice..", in the case of a 4-year ban of Lee Evans from all sports activities all over the world in 2013.
Meanwhile, this same panel and persons in WADA (Nigeria) have also been involved in several previous and even more recent cases involving Nigerian athletes who have been unable to challenge the draconian decisions handed down because they are told that sports matters are not to be settled in Nigerian civil courts, or that Nigeria stands to be banned by international federations, like FIFA, and so on, should such cases be taken to court.
All athletes simply cannot afford the financial cost and stress of going to a civil Nigerian court, so although they reject the decisions, they languish for the rest of their lives in depression and frustration.
Meanwhile, officials of these panels (including WADA), unperturbed and unmoved by the consequences of their 'killer' procedures and decisions, simpky hand down hitherto, unchallenged judgements, and continue to live their own sheltered lives, leaving behind doomed athletics careers, ruined lives, depressed athletes and officials, and huge losses in talent, medals and trophies to Nigerian sports.
All of that may be about to change with this 'innocuous' judgement of December 20, 2020, that took 7 years of an innocent person's life - Lee Evans.
Tonight, 'learned friends' shall be peering into the bowels of the judgement, whilst lay-parliamentarians will lend their voices and experiences to the subject and its wider implications.
Do not miss this highly informative and education diet of 'Sport and the Law', on tonight's edition of The Sports Parliament, from 10:30pm, on Africa's largest TV network, NTA.
