Nigeria’s place in African Sports - so that the world never forgets!

Tomorrow is the finals of the 2025 President Federations Cup in Lagos. All roads lead to the Mobolaji Johnson Arena for the climax to the 2025 football season in Nigeria.

I shall be there to witness the crowning of a brand new men’s Champion.

The month of June is very significant in the story of Nigerian sports in relation to Africa and the world, at large. Particularly, it is the month of the ‘1976 Soweto Uprising’ in South Africa.
What has Nigeria got to do with that?
A whole lot!

I have been wracking my brain to identify and locate Nigerians that are still alive and around, that were involved, that can tell the story of the past Half a Century for the benefit of history, and more importantly, so that the world does not forget Nigeria’s contributions and impact through Sports and Diplomacy in African and World Sports.
They are huge, to say the least.

This Saturday (June 28th, 2025) morning, on ‘90 mins with Mathematical7’, join Waheed Ekun, Dr. Evelyn Urhobo and I in a special Conversation on Nigeria’s past in sports and diplomacy events of the past 50 years, and more.

This afternoon - preparing for ‘Night of Tributes’ for late ‘Chairman’ Chukwu!

Earlier today, I visited the Wall of Fame at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, NIIA, Lagos.

The National monument is still looking as beautiful as when it was erected two years ago for everlasting remembrance and recognition of the historic contribution of some forgotten sports heroes to Nigeria’s Sports Diplomacy.

Amongst the names written permanently on the marbled wall are those of the ‘Chairman’, Christian Chukwu, MFR, and Charles Bassey, MON, two members of Nigeria’s 1980 African Cup of Nations’ winning squad. Both of them died a few hours apart, on the same day, a few weeks ago.

The body of Christian Chukwu, a former Captain and Coach of the national team of Nigeria, will be laid to rest in Enugu State on August 16, 2025.

That of Charles Bassey will be buried on August 9, 2025, in Akwa Ibom State.

Whilst details of both funerals will soon be made public, Special Organising committees have been set up by the respective families and State Governments of the two heroes to handle the arrangements for their funerals.

Those desirous to play a part in the arrangements, or want to support the families in any way to make the events befitting, should please do so. They need all the support the public can render NOW.
I shall publish the names and contact details of the persons that can be reached for that purpose, soon.

Meanwhile, I am also heading a small independent committee in Lagos, to organise a ‘Night of Tributes’ for friends and fans of Christian Chukwu that may not be able to attend the funeral in Enugu, but wish to be a part of the national event in Lagos.

The event of songs and tributes will take place by the famous wall at the NIIA, Victoria Island Lagos, in the evening of July 28th, 2025, the second anniversary of the decoration of the heroes as AirPeace Ambassadors.

Any individuals or groups interested in being a part of this small but special evening, in any way, can contact me through this platform, or directly, privately. Every contribution shall be acknowledged properly.

Meanwhile, I invite all to enjoy this short clip of the AirPeace-sponsored ‘NIIA Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame’ waiting to receive family, fans and friends of ‘the Chairman’ in Lagos, soon.

From left, John Cashin (Chairman, Lagos State Wres From left, John Cashin (Chairman, Lagos State Wrestling Association), Lee Evans (former World Champion, world record holder and Double Olympic Gold medallist) and Segun Odegbami, at the finals of the 2019 Wasimi Youth Summer Soccer championship, in Wasimi, today.
Right now the Wasimi Youth Summer Football champio Right now the Wasimi Youth Summer Football championship, ends. The final match has just ended.
The participants have dwindled in number. There are only 4 clubs with their players left here. But the spectators have increased and today wr are witnessing the largest audience yet at the 2019 festival of football.
Too many things have happened in this environment these past two weeks that have left me breathless in e excitement, and further convinced about the efficacy of sports to impact a community or even society the way no other activity can.
For example, HITV, at a time the fastest growing TV station in Nigeria, packed up and closed down the moment it lost its right to the Premier League.
Till Now, DSTV's dominance of satellite TV broadcast is its stranglehold on several sports rights, particularly the EPL and European leagues.

But those are by the way. Here in Wasimi, a social-inclusion revolution has started. For the next few days, I invite all to follow the stories of incredible developments in Wasimi Orile on www.mathematical7.com. They are simply mind-blowing.

Let me wet your appetite.
A Hungarian business delegation caught the curiosity bug and has visited Wasimi Orile on an exploration. They left the country after 3 days with impressions that will shock all those young people who are deserting life in thè 'backward' village for urban areas and big cities, or scrambling and paying to be re-enslaved and put on rickety slave ships heading to Europe!

The Hungarians took a good look at the 'Garden of Eden' and did not want to depart from Wasimi Orile. The evidence will be presented in full colour on the website.
PLUS the story of hundreds of boys and girls in the summer championship that walked 10 kilometres (to and fro) to a small hamlet deep in the jungle outside Wasimi, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, in the little hamlet called Lemo, for a night of music, dance, feasting and film in the jungle.
Lee Evans and John Cashin, my two American friends, both forrmer athletes, are with me now in Wasimi for the finals. They have become the first permanent returnees from America coming back to their ancestral roots.
Do you see the irony?
From the venue of the Wasimi Youth Summer Football From the venue of the Wasimi Youth Summer Football champion for over 2000 football players from all over the country between ages 12 and 18, boys and girls. Over 3000 spectators watching what has become a true festival of youths and football. The Segun Odegbami International College and Sports Academy are actively driving this unique project that has stoked the local economy of Wasimi beyond imagination. 2 more weeks to go. The pictures speak.
